Apple new model launch: Dipli’s view on impact on trade-in and market trends

On 20 September, Apple will release its latest iPhone models, sparking a significant shift in the trade-in landscape. Historical data from Dipli, a large French refurbish enabler, reveals that following the Apple iPhone 15 launch last year, the number of trade-ins in the French market surged by 200%, a remarkable increase compared to typical weekly figures. This spike underscores how new releases influence consumer behavior and the refurbished market.

Dipli plays a crucial role in this ecosystem running different trade-in schemes for large operators. Due to their size, their data is more than relevant for understanding the European secondary mobile market.

Trade in trends 2023

Notably, the most traded-in models post-launch have been the iPhone 11 64GB, iPhone 12 64GB, and iPhone 13 128GB. Surprisingly, the iPhone 14 128GB did not make it to the top 15 traded-in models last year. This trend suggests a growing tendency among users to hold onto their devices longer, with many opting to skip a generation and retain their smartphones for approximately 36 months.

What will 2024 bring?

Looking ahead to 2024, it is expected that the Apple iPhone 12, 13, and 14 will dominate the trade-in charts. Historically, trade-in values for older models decline by an average of 7% about 30 days after a new release. Currently, an iPhone 15 128GB trades for on average € 485, about 55% of its original price of € 869, reflecting the substantial value retention of Apple iPhones even a year post-release.
