Maximizing value: how BuyBay turned BCC’s bankruptcy into a sustainable solution

In the fast-paced world of retail, timing is everything. This was never more evident than in the recent collaboration between BuyBay, a leading European recommerce expert and partner of companies like Amazon, bol. eBay, and Conrad, and the Dutch electronics retailer BCC. Following BCC’s bankruptcy, BuyBay played a critical role in liquidating over 40,000 electronic products within just one month, ensuring that eight key store locations were cleared in time for their transfer to MediaMarkt ahead of Black Friday 2023.

BCC’s race against time

After filing for bankruptcy, BCC’s receiver faced the monumental challenge of vacating 17 stores, with a strict deadline to prepare eight major locations for MediaMarkt, one of Europe’s largest electronics retailers. With Black Friday looming, the pressure was on to clear out inventory that ranged from brand-new stock to display items, older models, and returned goods. Each product required a tailored approach to maximize its resale value, a challenge that BuyBay was well-equipped to handle.

BuyBay’s expertise in recommerce

Since 2021, BuyBay has been a partner of BCC, specializing in processing and reselling returned products and overstock. For this project, BuyBay’s dedicated team took full control of the liquidation process, from packaging and transporting the goods to its distribution center in Nijmegen, to assessing and reselling the products. Using their proprietary recommerce software, "You Grade," BuyBay evaluated each item's condition and market demand to determine the best resale channels using 20 different marketplaces and BuyBay’s own auction site Beluga. The result? Some items, such as popular tablets, laptops, and smartphones, were resold for up to 89% of their original retail value.

A sustainable and even profitable solution

The partnership not only allowed BCC’s receiver to efficiently clear their stores but also contributed to the circular economy by extending the life of more than 110,000 products. Machiel Tiddens, CEO of BuyBay, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “The past three years have seen us work closely with BCC to maximize the profitability of their recommerce efforts and extend the lifecycle of their products. BCC’s choice of BuyBay as their liquidation partner underscores their trust in our ability to provide efficient, sustainable, and profitable recommerce solutions.”

Dennis Oolbekkink, Business Analyst at BCC, expressed relief at BuyBay’s comprehensive handling of the liquidation process, noting that it not only expedited the process but also aligned with BCC's commitment to sustainability. “We’re pleased to have contributed to the circular economy by working with BuyBay to extend the life of these products,” said Oolbekkink.
