In Q2 2024, the European secondary smartphone market grew by 7% year-on-year, reaching 4.8 million units sold, according to research from CCS Insight. However, in terms of value, the market declined by 8%, amounting to €1.3 billion. Comparing Q1 2024 with Q2 2024, total sales reached 9.7 million units, with a value of €2.8 billion. This reflects a slight decrease in volume (Q1 vs Q2) by approximately 2%, while the decline in value was more pronounced at around 13%. The average price of a used smartphone in Europe was € 282, down by €23 from previous quarters, contributing to the drop in revenue.
Apple still dominates
In Q2 2024, Apple products made up 69% of the secondary mobile market sales, with Samsung accounting for 22%, and other brands, including Google and Xiaomi, representing 9%. While Apple's sales volume declined, Samsung and other brands saw an increase. The top three model ranges sold were the Apple iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13. The iPhone 11 64GB was the best-selling model, comprising 9% of the total European sales volume in Q2 2024.
Channels
In Q2, OEMs and networks accounted for 20% of the market volume, while retailers and marketplaces comprised 66%, and 14% came from other channels such as insurers and enterprises. The OEM and networks channel declined, while the other channels remained stable. Retail channels experienced a moderate increase.
