Why we won’t see the anticipated Apple iPhone supercycle despite AI

Many industry analysts have predicted that 2024 would be a banner year for Apple, with expectations of a potential Apple iPhone “supercycle.” This term refers to a surge in Apple iPhone upgrades, typically driven by a significant feature or innovation that compels a large segment of users to replace their old devices with the latest model. Some believed Apple Intelligence, the tech giant’s much-anticipated AI initiative, would be the trigger this year. However, recent insights suggest otherwise.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a supercycle for the Apple iPhone 16 series is unlikely. One major factor dampening expectations is the current global macroeconomic environment, which has led to sluggish smartphone demand across major markets, including China, the world’s largest. Additionally, incremental upgrades in the Apple iPhone 16 models, such as slightly larger screens and a new 48MP sensor for ultra-wide cameras, are not expected to drive significant consumer interest.

Moreover, the staggered rollout of Apple Intelligence features has raised doubts. Key features, including Genmoji and Apple’s AI chatbot, will not be available until the end of the year or even later. Furthermore, the Apple Intelligence platform isn’t yet available in key markets like the EU and China, limiting its potential impact.

Impact on globale secondary global markets

In short, while Apple Intelligence holds promise for the future, 2024 is unlikely to see the Apple iPhone supercycle many were hoping for. Instead, some industry experts believe that the full impact of Apple’s AI innovations may not be felt until next year. This is not the news the global secondary mobile market was hoping for or anticipating. Demand for high-quality devices continues to outpace supply. A supercycle could have been the game changer, potentially shifting the balance for the first time ever.
