Virgin Media O2 has reported a 56% reduction in its Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions against its 2020 baseline. This milestone aligns with Earth Day and reflects the operator’s broader efforts to meet its Science Based Targets by 2030. The company aims to reduce operational emissions by 90% and reach net zero across all operations, products, and supply chains by 2040—ten years ahead of the UK’s national target. But it looks like Virgin Media O2 is making one mistake.
Refurbished range expands consumer options
Virgin Media O2 has relaunched its “Like New” range, offering refurbished Apple iPhones and other smartphones that have passed 40 quality checks. Most operators tend to focus only on cosmetically pristine used devices, which are scarce, expensive to refurbish, and not always the most sustainable option as they need new components, which have an negative environmental impact. The secondary market includes a wide variety of device conditions, and there’s value in offering all cosmetic grades. If consumers are clearly informed about what to expect, they’re often open to purchasing devices with visible signs of use, especially if it means better pricing and a more sustainable choice. Limiting offers to top-grade devices shows a narrow understanding by these networks of the refurbished market. Operators could expand reach and reduce waste by embracing the full spectrum of used devices.
Sustainability linked to annual bonuses
To drive internal accountability, Virgin Media O2 has incorporated carbon reduction into its annual bonus scheme. The initiative supports the company’s Better Connections Plan, its 2024 sustainability strategy that includes climate action, circular economy leadership, and digital inclusion.
Circular initiatives drive reuse and repair
As part of its commitment to the circular economy, Virgin Media O2 supports recycling and reuse through O2 Recycle. Since 2009, more than four million devices have been processed through the platform, returning €4 10 million to consumers. The programme now accepts smartphones, tablets, MacBooks, wearables, earbuds, and gaming consoles. Businesses can also donate devices via O2 Recycle for Business.
Sustainability strategy enters final phase
As Virgin Media O2 approaches the final year of its Better Connections Plan, it remains focused on its dual mission: environmental leadership and digital inclusion. Nicola Green, Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Officer, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to driving positive change for both people and planet.
