British network Virgin Media O2 has announced its largest-ever device donation program, committing to rehome up to 12,000 pre-owned smartphones to people in need across the UK in 2025. This initiative, in collaboration with Hubbub and Good Things Foundation, aims to address digital exclusion and reduce electronic waste (e-waste).
Partnerships with key charities
The company will distribute around 1,000 refurbished devices per month through Hubbub’s Community Calling programme and Good Things Foundation’s National Device Bank. These organisations will pass the smartphones to local charities and community groups, ensuring they reach those who need them most. Additionally, free O2 mobile data will be provided via the National Databank initiative.
Supporting connectivity and essential services
These donated devices will help people access vital services, including job applications, medical appointments, and online training courses. By ensuring digital access, Virgin Media O2 aims to empower individuals and help them stay connected with loved ones. Virgin Media O2 is sourcing the smartphones from customer returns and its O2 Recycle service. This initiative supports the circular economy by reintroducing unwanted tech into circulation. O2 Recycle, available to all mobile users, has repurposed over four million devices since 2009, preventing them from ending up in landfills.
Commitment to sustainability and inclusion
This initiative aligns with Virgin Media O2’s Better Connections Plan, which aims to connect one million digitally excluded people. Nicola Green, Virgin Media O2’s representative, highlighted the importance of rehoming devices to reduce e-waste and provide essential digital access.
Government and charity support
The initiative has received praise fromUK's Telecoms Minister Sir Chris Bryant, who emphasized the role of tech reuse in bridging the digital divide. Leaders from Good Things Foundation and Hubbub also applauded Virgin Media O2’s commitment to digital inclusion.
Expanding digital access nationwide
Virgin Media O2 continues to lead digital inclusion efforts in the UK. The company co-founded the National Databank and has extended its Community Calling programme, having already donated 20,000 smartphones. Individuals can also contribute by donating their unused devices.
