Virgin Media O2 has expanded its device donation efforts across the United Kingdom by supplying hundreds of refurbished smartphones and free mobile data to communities in Fife, Swansea and Tees Valley. The initiative is delivered through The Multibank and forms part of the operator’s wider commitment to support households facing financial hardship.
Multibank partnership strengthens
The donations are made through the company’s Community Calling programme in partnership with environmental charity Hubbub. The Multibank, created by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, operates as a central hub for essential non food items ranging from clothing to furniture. Connectivity support has now been added to its remit, reflecting the increasing importance of digital access in daily life.
Rising need for connectivity
Virgin Media O2’s pledge includes donating up to 12,000 devices during 2025 to people who cannot afford a smartphone or mobile data. Findings from the Digital Nation 2025 report by Good Things Foundation show that around 1.6 million adults in the UK do not have a device such as a smartphone, tablet or laptop. This gap limits access to employment, healthcare services, housing resources and digital communication.
Targeted support across regions
Local leaders working with The Multibank help identify individuals most in need. This includes people who have recently lost jobs, those leaving the care system, refugees and survivors of domestic abuse. Health professionals, schools and community partners play a central role in directing devices to those most affected by digital exclusion.
Practical impact on daily life
With access to refurbished devices and data, individuals can book medical appointments, apply for jobs, participate in training, search for secure housing and communicate with friends and family. The support aims to provide stable digital access during winter and throughout 2025.
Corporate commitment continues
Nicola Green, chief communications and corporate affairs officer at Virgin Media O2, highlighted the importance of Internet access and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to digital inclusion. She noted the continued work of initiatives such as the National Databank, Community Calling and targeted broadband and mobile plans for people receiving benefits.
Leadership perspectives on inclusion
Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, president of The Multibank, emphasised the essential nature of digital access. He noted that 45% of households with children fall below the minimum digital living standard. He described connectivity as fundamental to modern life and recognised the partnership’s role in improving digital wellbeing for families.
Supporting circular technology
The donation programme also contributes to reducing electronic waste. Virgin Media O2 sources devices from its own supply chain, placing unused technology back into circulation. This approach supports both environmental goals and wider digital participation by ensuring more people can get online.
