Valu, a financial technology provider in MENA, has joined forces with MobileMasr, Egypt’s first tech-driven platform for used electronics, to launch the country’s first peer-to-peer Buy-Now, Pay-Later (BNPL) service for Apple iPhones and other pre-owned smartphones. The new service allows buyers and sellers to transact directly, backed by MobileMasr’s patented diagnostic tools and Valu’s flexible payment solutions. Transactions include full product verification, identity cross checks, location validation, secure QR code checkout, and auto-generated e-contracts. Sellers receive payouts within four working days, creating a more trusted environment for Egypt’s fast-growing second-hand smartphone market.
How the process works
The customer journey begins when a seller lists a pre-owned smartphone on MobileMasr and verifies it through the platform’s diagnostic tool. Interested buyers can inspect the device in person and finalize the sale using a secure QR code or payment link. MobileMasr’s system then validates GPS location, verifies national IDs, and checks product details before processing the transaction.
More on MobileMasr
MobileMasr, founded in 2021 and based in Cairo, is Egypt’s first tech-driven marketplace for new and second-hand electronics, including Apple iPhones. The platform emphasizes trust through its patented diagnostic tools, product verification, identity validation, and secure payment processes. It connects both private sellers and authorized vendors, offering buyers nationwide delivery and flexible instalment options. In 2023, MobileMasr secured $ 500,000 seed funding to expand services, strengthen user trust, and grow Egypt’s fast-evolving secondary smartphone and electronics market.
Flexible BNPL plans for buyers
Buyers can choose Valu as their payment method and access payment plans of up to 60 months. For a limited time, they also benefit from 0% interest, 0% purchase fees, and 0% down payment on plans of up to 12 months. Each transaction is archived digitally, providing added transparency and legal safeguards.
A response to market challenges
Egypt’s second-hand smartphone sector is rapidly growing but remains mostly informal and cash-driven. By combining Valu’s BNPL platform, U, with MobileMasr’s trusted diagnostics, the partnership introduces a secure and flexible model for peer-to-peer transactions.
Industry leaders highlight the impact
Walid Hassouna, CEO of Valu, said: “For the first time, Egyptians can transact safely among themselves while enjoying the flexibility of BNPL. This partnership is a market disruptor that creates endless opportunities.”
Wael El Ashry, Founder and CEO of MobileMasr, added: “By partnering with Valu, we are taking a major step in making second-hand electronics safe, simple, and financed.”
Supporting affordability and sustainability
The partnership not only makes used smartphones more accessible but also extends their lifecycle, reducing electronic waste. It positions BNPL as a new driver of growth in Egypt’s peer-to-peer economy while aligning with broader environmental goals.
