Strong demand for used smartphones in India’s Tier 2 and 3 cities

India’s used smartphone market, according to CCS Insight the fastest growing in the worltd, is undergoing a significant transformation, with Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities leading the charge. According to OLX India, demand in these cities grew by 16% and 15%, respectively, underscoring the increasing appetite for affordable, good-quality devices outside metropolitan areas. These towns are becoming the main demand drivers, showing how second-hand smartphones have evolved into gateways for connectivity, learning, and opportunity.

Buyers prefer higher-value devices

A notable shift is taking place in consumer preferences. Instead of opting for the lowest-cost handsets, value-conscious buyers are increasingly drawn to higher-value used smartphones. The € 110–280 price range has now become the most popular segment, growing 20% on OLX, with the average selling price (ASP) reaching € 225. This indicates that buyers are prioritising quality and reliability over simply finding the cheapest option.

Regional differences across India

On a regional level, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have emerged as the biggest growth centres for used smartphones, while Tamil Nadu has shown more modest expansion. These differences highlight how local economies and digital adoption trends influence the demand for pre-owned devices.

Understanding India’s tier classification

The tier system is a common way to classify Indian cities based on population size, economic activity, and infrastructure. Tier 1 cities are large metropolitan areas such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Tier 2 cities are smaller but economically significant urban centres like Lucknow, Pune, and Jaipur. Tier 3 cities are smaller towns with growing populations and developing infrastructure. In the context of smartphone demand, Tier 2 and 3 cities represent the rising middle class and aspirational consumers outside major metros.

Popular brands dominate demand

Apple iPhone, Samsung, and Vivo continue to dominate demand across OLX’s platform. Apple iPhone is the most sought-after brand in the €110–280 category, particularly among aspirational buyers who see it as combining brand value with affordability. Samsung maintains strong traction in the €280–560 price band, holding its ground in the mid-premium segment. Meanwhile, Vivo has established itself as the overall category leader, largely due to its popularity with younger buyers.

OLX’s position in India

OLX has been present in India since 2009, operating on a consumer-to-consumer model that has helped normalise the buying and selling of second-hand goods. While basic listings are free, the company generates revenue through premium ads, featured listings, and advertising services. Its strong foothold in the used mobile phone segment has made it a key player in shaping India’s secondary smartphone market.

Outlook for the secondary market

The shift toward higher-value devices in Tier 2 and 3 cities reflects a growing maturity in the Indian secondary smartphone market. Buyers are seeking better quality, affordability, and aspirational brands, with OLX positioned to benefit from this accelerating trend. As more consumers recognise the value of second-hand smartphones, demand is likely to continue rising across India’s smaller cities.
