USB-IF launches compliance program to align with EU USB-C directive

In a move towards enhancing the adoption and compliance of USB technology, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) has announced the launch of its new USB-IF conformity specifications program. The USB Implementers Forum, Inc. (USB-IF) is a non-profit organization established to support and promote the advancement and adoption of USB technology. This initiative aims to assist manufacturers in meeting the fundamental requirements of the European Union’s Common Charger Directive, which mandates the use of USB-C across a wide range of portable, battery-powered devices within the EU. This new program comes in response to the EU’s directive, passed in 2022, which will take effect for portable, battery-powered devices like smartphones and tablets starting January 1, 2025, and for laptops in 2026.

"While this program does not represent a full certification of USB technologies, it provides a formalized pathway for OEMs and ODMs to quickly test their products," said Jeff Ravencraft, President and Chief Operating Officer of USB-IF. "We are confident that this new program will help the industry achieve compliance, ensuring that their products can continue to be sold in the EU market."

Streamlined compliance process for manufacturers

The USB-C program offers a simplified and cost-effective method for manufacturers to demonstrate compliance with the EU's directive. Through this program, manufacturers can have their USB Type-C products tested by USB-IF-authorized independent test labs (ITLs). Upon successful completion, manufacturers receive documentation that verifies their products meet EU’s specifications, streamlining the process and helping manufacturers adhere to regulatory deadlines. The program defines a minimum set of required tests to establish basic conformity, with USB-IF reviewing and officially approving all submitted test results.

Distinction from USB-IF's other programs

It is crucial to distinguish the new USB-IF program from the broader USB-IF compliance program. While the new program focuses on ensuring compliance with the EU mandate, the USB-IF Compliance Program offers in-depth testing that not only confirms adherence to EU specifications but also thoroughly evaluates data performance, reliability, and interoperability of USB products. Products that pass these rigorous tests are eligible to carry the certified USB logo, a mark recognized and trusted by consumers.

"This program ensures that all submitted products undergo an evaluation focused on the critical elements we believe are necessary for compliance with the EU mandate," said Abdul Ismail, USB-IF Chief Technology Officer and Chairman of the Board. "Our testing stages are designed to provide a precise and reliable assessment, enabling OEMs and ODMs to confidently demonstrate to the EU that their products meet the regulatory requirements."
