UK-based CCS Insight occasionally hosts webinars to share the latest developments in the telecom market. The company is strong in European and American data. In a recent session, analysts discussed what they call “Mobile Buying Trends.” Consumer purchasing habits are evolving, influenced by shifting preferences in sales channels, brand loyalty, and connectivity needs. CCS Insight’s late-2024 Mobile Buying Survey, covering the UK, revealed key market trends—from the growing popularity of second-hand and refurbished devices to changing views on trade-in programs, annual price increases, and unlimited data plans.
Marketshare
In the UK, used and refurbished smartphones currently hold a 12% market share, evenly divided between the organised and non-organised sectors. However, this figure appears somewhat low, as other data indicate a higher acceptance of used devices.

Intension to buy used or refurbished
In the UK, 53% of respondents would consider purchasing a used or refurbished smartphone, a decline from 60% in 2019. The data highlights strong interest among those aged 16 to 24, with at least 63% open to buying such a device. In contrast, the lowest interest is seen among those aged 65 and older, with 41% expressing willingness to consider a used model.
