iFixit: rising tariffs make repair the smart alternative for consumers and manufacturers

Recent tariff announcements are likely to raise consumer electronics prices significantly in the U.S. According to a January 2025 report by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), tariffs could increase retail prices by up to 16.4%. The actual figures announced last week suggest even higher impacts. For instance, the manufacturing cost of a new Apple iPhone is expected to rise from around € 515 to € 795. This increase will almost certainly be passed on to consumers, especially as building alternative supply chains in the U.S. will take years. Please note that since, tariffs on import from China have been changed twice and are currently at 125%.

Repair becomes a cost-saving lifeline

Repair is not completely immune to these rising costs—parts and tools will also get more expensive—but remains the most resilient and affordable option for consumers. Maintaining and repairing current devices helps reduce economic pressure and extend the lifespan of existing products, making repair increasingly attractive in an uncertain market.

Why manufacturers should embrace repair

While some brands are still hesitant, others see repair as a strategic advantage. Manufacturers that provide repair documentation, distribute affordable parts, and support independent repair networks stand to gain long-term benefits in brand loyalty and sustainability impact. Even if tariffs are rolled back, companies that already invested in repair will retain a competitive edge.

Repair-ready products are the future

Designing devices with repairability in mind—offering accessible documentation, affordable parts, and reliable repair networks—is becoming the benchmark for forward-thinking manufacturers. Right to Repair legislation in the U.S. and Europe is accelerating this shift. Now, more than ever, consumers are demanding products that are built to last.

iFixit invites manufacturers to collaborate

To support this transition, iFixit is expanding its partnerships with manufacturers by offering co-developed repair guides, distribution of genuine parts, insights into product repairability, and training for the next generation of repair experts. Their network of over 17,000 professionals worldwide ensures repair is not only possible but practical.
