Amazon pioneers packaging reduction across Europe

Amazon is leading the charge in sustainable shipping across Europe, with a clear focus on drastically reducing packaging waste while maintaining product safety and rapid delivery. This initiative aligns with a broader industry trend toward minimizing environmental impact throughout the supply chain. Customers are already benefiting from less unnecessary packaging, a reduced need for at-home recycling, and the assurance of fast, secure delivery for their items.

Eliminating single-use plastics

In a significant move toward greater sustainability, the Amazon's network across Europe successfully eliminated all single-use plastic delivery packaging in 2022. As a result, 100% of all delivery packaging used throughout Europe is now fully recyclable. This shift from plastic to paper and cardboard alternatives not only addresses a key environmental concern but also simplifies the recycling process for customers once they have received their orders.

Half of orders have reduced packaging

The commitment to less waste is evident in the delivery figures. Currently, one in two orders across Europe is delivered without a traditional Amazon box. Instead, these items arrive in minimal packaging, such as paper bags, cardboard envelopes, or, in many cases, with no added packaging whatsoever. This strategy, employing smarter packaging choices, helps to avoid unnecessary material use and makes end-of-life management easier for the consumer.

Ships in product packaging program

When deemed safe and secure, the company utilizes the 'Ships in Product Packaging' approach, delivering items in their original branded boxes with only a shipping label affixed. This method is suitable for products like a toaster in its retail box or a multipack of nappies in its product-specific packaging. This reduces the need for an external shipping box, saving materials and minimizing waste. The decision on which products can safely ship this way is determined by engineers using simulated delivery tests, and machine learning continues to be employed to identify a growing number of suitable items.

Over one billion orders shipped without extra box

The global scale of the packaging reduction efforts highlights the significance of the change. Since 2019, more than one billion orders globally have shipped without an added Amazon packaging. In the past year, 12% of all global orders were shipped without any extra packaging. Furthermore, since 2015, the cumulative effect of these packaging reduction programmes has successfully prevented the use of over four million metric tons of packaging materials worldwide.

Customer choice and privacy assured

Customers are kept informed about this approach, as a notification appears on the product detail page and again at the checkout when an item is identified as a potential ‘Ships in Product Packaging’ candidate. For orders that are intended as a gift, or for those who simply prefer greater discretion, the option to add an Amazon box remains available at the checkout with just a single click at no additional cost.

Automated made-to-fit packaging

When a product does require added packaging for safe transit, the focus shifts to using the absolute minimum necessary. Across European fulfilment centres, the company is installing automated packing machines designed to create ‘made-to-fit’ packaging for individual orders. These smart machines use sensors to precisely measure a product's dimensions, fabricating a custom-sized paper bag or box around it. This process drastically reduces empty space, uses fewer materials, and ensures the packaging is easily recyclable, with the shipping label applied directly for immediate dispatch.

Future Focus on Waste Reduction

Looking ahead, the commitment to innovation in packaging and delivery remains a core goal. The company is continually testing new methods and working with its selling partners, including those selling premium electronics such as the Apple iPhone, to design more efficient packaging. The introduction of new technology in fulfilment centres, combined with this collaborative approach, aims to further reduce waste across the network and enhance the overall customer experience.
