The 2024 Home Delivery Sustainability Report by Descartes Systems Group highlights a persistent interest in sustainable home delivery options, despite the economic pressures facing consumers. The study, which surveyed 8,000 participants across Europe, Canada, and the United States, shows that 57% of respondents are interested in eco-friendly delivery services. However, 89% indicated that their willingness to pay more for sustainable options is influenced by current economic conditions, with 34% reporting that financial strain has significantly impacted their motivation.
Consumers seek eco-friendly options but face economic constraints
Despite these challenges, the report reveals promising statistics for the environment and businesses: 99% of consumers are actively reducing their environmental footprint or are open to doing so. Moreover, 38% stated they frequently or always make purchase decisions based on a product’s or company’s environmental impact.
The study suggests an opportunity for retailers to stand out by offering sustainable delivery solutions that also save money for consumers. Ken Wood, EVP Product Management at Descartes, highlighted the importance of educating consumers about the cost-efficiency of eco-friendly delivery options, noting that these choices not only enhance delivery density but also reduce transportation costs for businesses.
Preferred sustainable delivery methods
The survey findings indicate that consumers prefer options like combining orders into a single delivery or opting for carbon-neutral delivery services. These preferences align with the desire to balance environmental responsibility with economic practicality.
Insights across demographics
Descartes and SAPIO Research explored variations in consumer attitudes based on age and geography. The report aims to help retailers and logistics organizations understand the evolving intersection between sustainability, last-mile delivery, and buying behavior. It offers valuable insights into how economic factors like inflation are shaping consumer preferences for sustainable home delivery services.
