In a strategic move to promote sustainable consumer electronics practices, smartphone trade-in terminals have been launched in Estonia. A collaboration between GET-RE, Globe Commerce OÜ, and electronics retailer ONOFF has brought this innovative solution to stores in Tallinn and Tartu. The initiative is expected to expand to all ten ONOFF locations across the country.
How the terminal system works
Customers can now bring their old Apple iPhones or other smartphones to a REbox terminal in-store. Once the device is inserted, the terminal evaluates its condition and instantly offers a buyback price. If accepted, the customer receives an ONOFF gift card on the spot. Phones that are not suitable for reuse are responsibly recycled, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
Retailers lead the circular economy push
This development supports the growing trend of circular economy solutions in the mobile phone market. Businesses like ONOFF now have a tangible way to reduce electronic waste and demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. Consumers benefit from a simple and rewarding process, turning old phones into new value.
Estonia sets new density benchmark
Estonia is quickly becoming a pioneer in automated trade-in solutions. Earlier, Ringy launched a similar kiosk system with Tele2 using Pandas technology. With the addition of GET-RE’s REbox, Estonia may now have the world’s highest density of in-store automated trade-in terminals per capita.
A milestone for GET-RE and partners
The successful rollout highlights the strong cooperation between GET-RE and Globe Commerce OÜ. Special recognition goes to Robert Hansen, CEO of Globe Commerce OÜ, for his leadership in bringing this vision to life. With REboxes now active, the project is poised for further growth in Northern Europe.
