A new survey by Counterpoint Research highlights how strongly Indian smartphone users connect emotions with device durability. According to the findings, 95% of respondents reported feeling upset, anxious or panicked when their phone cracked or fell. This shows how durability has become more than just a functional requirement and now directly influences user confidence and emotional security.
Durability is a key purchase factor
The research reveals that 79% of Indian users view durability as very important when purchasing a smartphone. A durable screen emerged as the most important feature, followed by a stronger frame and water resistance. With nine in ten respondents admitting to dropping their devices, the demand for resilient smartphones is only increasing.
Users avoid risky environments
Fear of damage is changing how people use their devices. The study shows that 78% of respondents avoid using their smartphones in harsh conditions such as heavy rain, water exposure or extreme heat. Overheating was the most common concern at 41%, followed by battery issues and accidental damage, both at 32%.

Repairs add to user concerns
Repair costs are another challenge for consumers. The survey shows that seven in ten users spend over € 22 on repairs, while nearly three in ten spend more than € 55. Research Analyst Abhijeet Paleja explained that physical damage and battery issues are the leading causes, with 29% of users paying an amount equivalent to a quarter of the average smartphone price in India.
Fear of losing personal data
Beyond the financial aspect, 89% of users fear losing personal data if their device fails. Photos, videos, banking information, contacts and chat histories were identified as the most vulnerable. As a result, nine in ten users invest in accessories like covers, screen guards or insurance to safeguard their devices.
Brands focusing on durability perception
Research Director Tarun Pathak noted that durability has shifted from being optional to essential. He stressed that consumers expect devices to perform reliably in every scenario, from water exposure to extreme conditions. Notably, 86% of OPPO users rated the brand positively on durability, underscoring how companies can strengthen trust by investing in resilient design.
Durability improves long-term value
Modern smartphones use advanced materials such as scratch-resistant glass, ceramic shields, aerospace-grade aluminium and IP-rated sealing. Combined with shock-absorbing designs and rigorous testing, these innovations enhance durability. A well-maintained and durable smartphone also holds its resale value for longer, an increasingly important factor in the growing secondary market.
