SellCell launches tool to predict smartphone depreciation

For the first time, SellCell, a US-based price comparison platform for smartphone trade-ins, helping consumers find the best resale value by comparing offers from top buyback merchants, has introduced a tool that predicts how smartphones will depreciate over time. The Smartphone Depreciation Calculator provides real-time insights based on data from leading US trade-in and resale platforms. The calculator estimates how much a device will lose in value over the next 6, 12, and 24 months. In addition, it provides an accurate current valuation and shows how much depreciation has already occurred since purchase.

A useful tool for consumers less for secondary market

While primarily designed for consumers looking to trade in or upgrade, the tool offers valuable insights into smartphone depreciation trends. However, it mainly reflects B2C devaluation, making it only partially suitable for professionals in the global secondary market.

Insights into flagship phone depreciation

SellCell’s tool tracks hundreds of smartphone models dating back to 2017. The calculator reveals how these devices have already depreciated and estimates future value losses. The below example projections from the calculator are based on a start date of  4 February 2025, providing insights into how much these 2023/4 flagship devices have already depreciated and how much more value these are expected to lose.

Helping US consumers make smarter decisions

The tool allows users to optimize their smartphone resale timing. By providing predictive insights, it enables smarter upgrades, maximized trade-in values, and better purchasing decisions.
