Realme extends software support for its smartphones

Realme has established itself as a budget-friendly smartphone brand, known for delivering feature-packed devices at competitive prices. However, its software support has historically been a drawback, with limited update cycles compared to many competitors. Extending software support will make Realme smartphones more appealing in the global secondary market, driving up trade-in values. As residual value becomes an increasingly important factor in consumer purchasing decisions, Realme’s improved approach positions it well for long-term success.

Four Android versions and six years of security updates

The Chinese manufacturer has now addressed these concerns. Starting 20 June 2025, all Realme smartphones still available in stores will receive four major Android updates and six years of security patches. This applies to all models, regardless of their price range, ensuring long-term support across the entire lineup.

Realme catches up with mid-tier competitors

With this new policy, Realme aligns itself with brands like OnePlus, whose OnePlus 13 will also receive four major Android upgrades and six years of security patches. This puts Realme ahead of brands like Motorola and Sony, which still offer shorter support periods for their devices.

Samsung and Google remain leaders

Despite Realme’s improvements, Samsung and Google continue to lead in software support. Their premium models now receive seven years of Android updates and security patches. Google extends this policy even to its budget-friendly Pixel 9a, offering users long-term software reliability.

Fairphone and Apple set long-term standards

Dutch manufacturer Fairphone remains a pioneer in longevity, offering up to eight years of updates for its devices. Fairphone’s commitment to sustainability has influenced other brands to extend their update policies. Apple also continues to set the bar high, with all devices running iOS 18 eligible for iOS 19, launching in September. Even the Apple iPhone XS and XR from 2018—already seven years old—will receive the update.
