Apple’s refurbished store offers recent-generation products like iPhones, MacBooks and iMacs with significant discounts. These devices are fitted with a new battery, outer shell, and glass, and they come with a 1-year Apple warranty. It’s the closest experience to buying new, only with plainer packaging. However, the range is limited. While M4 MacBooks and M1 iPads are often listed shortly after launch, newer Apple iPads and iPhones appear much later, if at all.
Limited selection of Apple iPhones
As of now, Apple’s refurbished store only sells Apple iPhone 14 models. This excludes more recent Apple iPhone 15 and 16 lines. Despite the pristine condition and warranty, the value is questionable. For example, Apple sells the refurbished Apple iPhone 13 (512 GB) for € 648, whereas the same model under Amazon Renewed Premium costs only € 404.
Amazon Renewed Premium expands options
Amazon’s Renewed Premium program is often cited as the closest rival to Apple’s own refurbishing service. It offers a 1-year return window, 90% battery health guarantee, and often includes devices not available in Apple’s refurbished range. For example, a renewed Apple iPhone 15 Pro can be found on Amazon for just € 660, compared to € 701 on Apple’s refurbished store.
Prices favour Amazon, not always Apple
A direct comparison reveals Apple’s store is rarely the cheapest. Refurbished M2 MacBook Air (512 GB) is € 748 from Amazon and € 799 from Apple. Even accessories like refurbished AirPods Pro 2 are more expensive at Apple (€ 196) than new ones sold on Amazon (€ 158). Yet, Apple’s store shines for the latest Macs: an M4 MacBook Pro is listed at € 1260, which Amazon currently cannot match.
Comparison likely similar in other regions
While 9to5Mac’s survey focuses on the U.S. market, it’s likely that similar dynamics apply globally. Apple’s refurbished products are known for their excellent quality but often come with a premium price tag. For many consumers, alternatives such as Amazon Renewed Premium, as well as platforms like refurbed, Cashify, Flipkart, and Back Market, offer more affordable yet reliable options when shopping for refurbished Apple devices.
