Every now and then, CCS Insight, a widely respected British research organisation with a strong reputation in the mobile and tech industries, hosts informative webinars to provide updated analysis on the state of the global secondary device market. These online events have become a valuable source of insights for industry stakeholders and observers who seek to stay ahead of the latest developments in this fast-evolving segment.
A comprehensive overview of where the global secondary market is heading
Last week, CCS Insight held its latest webinar, and once again, it delivered compelling data, market updates, and future outlooks. It was well worth attending for anyone involved in the trade of used and refurbished devices. A broad range of topics was covered, shedding light on how the organised secondary market is performing globally and regionally. Over the coming days, SecondaryMarket.news will share a selection of the most interesting insights, beginning with a snapshot of the global market.
Global sales of used and refurbished devices reached 145 million in 2024
According to CCS Insight, the total number of used and refurbished devices — including smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches — sold worldwide in 2024 reached 145 million units. Out of this total, approximately 115 million were smartphones, including a significant share of Apple iPhones. One notable trend was a drop in the average selling price of these devices, falling from € 287 (US $310) in 2023 to € 254 (US$ 275) in 2024. That price point brings the market back to the same level seen in 2021.
Lower prices didn’t stop the market from hitting an all-time market cap high
Despite the price decline, the total value of the secondary smartphone market hit a new all-time high. With volumes increasing from 109 million in 2023 to 115 million in 2024, the overall market cap grew to a record-breaking € 29.8 billion (US$ 32 billion). Looking ahead, CCS Insight forecasts continued growth. By 2028, the company expects total smartphone sales in the organised secondary market to reach 150 million units, with a projected value of € 42.8 billion (US$ 46 billion).
Retail remains the dominant sales channel in the European secondary market
In terms of sales channels, 66% of all used and refurbished smartphones sold in 2024 found their way to consumers via retail, including key online marketplaces, especially across Europe. Mobile network operators and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) accounted for a combined 21% of the market, while the remaining 13% was shared by smaller or less formalised channels.
