More than half of Germans plan to give second-hand gifts this Christmas, according to a recent representative survey by recommerce company rebuy. This marks an increase of 7% compared with 2023, highlighting a growing trend of gifting pre-loved items such as books, toys, or Apple iPhones. Sustainability is increasingly cited as the main reason for choosing second-hand gifts. In 2025, 73% of respondents mentioned environmental concerns, up 13% from 2023. Saving money remained a secondary motivator at 51%, showing that environmental awareness now outweighs financial incentives for many consumers.
Books and toys gain popularity
Second-hand books remain a top choice, with 35% of respondents planning to give them, a 9% increase from 2023. Similarly, toys saw a rise to 32%. These categories illustrate a growing acceptance of gently used products as meaningful holiday gifts.
Electronics and clothing follow trends
Gifts in electronics and clothing categories are also on the rise. Used Apple iPhones and other devices are intended by 23% of respondents, an increase of 4% compared with 2023. Clothing followed closely at 22%, while furniture saw the most significant growth, with 14% planning to gift used items, up 5%.
Pre-loved products become mainstream
According to Philipp Gattner, CEO of rebuy, second-hand consumption is becoming the standard. Consumers increasingly consider sustainability and quality, viewing used products as smart alternatives rather than taboo. High-quality refurbished electronics and other items are now seen as responsible, affordable, and desirable gifts.
