Over the past five years, Samsung Electronics and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have collaborated to drive global change through technology. Their partnership focuses on empowering young people, particularly millennials and Gen Z, who are passionate about addressing issues like climate change and social equality. With the right tools and platforms, this generation has the potential to influence policy and corporate strategies towards a more sustainable future.
As the 2030 deadline for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) approaches, Samsung and UNDP remain committed to advancing the Global Goals through innovation. In celebration of United Nations Day, the organizations released a report highlighting their progress.
Stephanie Choi, EVP & Head of Marketing at Samsung’s Mobile eXperience Business, stated, "We believe in collective efforts to create a better future for generations to come and in using technology for the public good. Our partnership with UNDP over the past five years has been a vital step on this journey, supporting young changemakers and raising awareness about the Global Goals. We’re grateful to contribute to a better future and look forward to continuing our journey to 2030 with the Galaxy community."
UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner emphasized the power of public-private partnerships, saying, "Our collaboration with Samsung demonstrates the power of genuine partnerships. We are proud of the progress achieved through the Samsung Global Goals app and Generation17 initiative and look forward to exploring new frontiers in sustainable development."
In 2019, Samsung and UNDP launched the Samsung Global Goals app, a platform informing Galaxy users about the 17 Global Goals and enabling donations through in-app ads, wallpapers, and direct contributions. Samsung matches all in-app ad revenue, maximizing efforts to support UNDP’s work toward these goals.
With over 300 million Galaxy users engaged since launch, the app has generated over US$ 20 million in donations for UNDP. The top priorities identified by Galaxy users include Goal 1 (No Poverty), Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), and Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), providing valuable insights into global challenges.
To further engage users, Samsung introduced interactive features like the Donation Leader Board in 2023 and limited-edition wallpapers in 2024, highlighting endangered species and offering a way to give back. Samsung plans to continue expanding the app to inspire collective action and long-lasting change.
