Samsung launches “Galaxy Easy Compensation” program to support used smartphone recycling

Samsung Electronics has announced a new initiative called “Galaxy Easy Compensation,” a program designed to help customers sell their used Galaxy smartphones. The program, which will launch on Samsung.com on 14 January 2025, allows users to sell their devices at any time of the year, even without purchasing a new Samsung product. The American distributor Likewize will oversee this program, suggesting that Samsung might be aiming to exert more control over trade-ins, much like Apple. What impact could this new initiative have on Samsung’s existing partners? Additionally, will Likewize collaborate with selective partners, potentially restricting access to used Samsung devices? There are still many unanswered questions about this initiative.

Supporting the circular economy

Samsung’s new program is part of the company’s broader efforts to contribute to the circular economy. By purchasing used smartphones from customers and reselling them or repurposing them for other uses, Samsung hopes to prolong the life cycle of its Galaxy products and reduce electronic waste. The company also envisions that "Galaxy Easy Compensation" will help maintain the long-term market value of Galaxy smartphones.

Expansion of the program

Initially available in South Korea, the program is expected to expand to other countries in the future. The entire operation, including the collection of used devices and compensation distribution, will be managed by Samsung’s partner, Likewize. We wonder what the impact of this will be to local Samsung partners, like Belgium’s L8P in the Benelux, that are providing trade-in services currently.

Flagship models eligible for compensation

"Galaxy Easy Compensation" is open to several popular Samsung Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21, Galaxy S20, as well as various models in the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip series. The list of eligible models may vary depending on the country, providing flexibility for a wider customer base.

Samsung's commitment to sustainable practices

Jung Ho-jin, Vice President of Samsung Electronics Korea, shared that the company expects the program to enhance the long-term value of Galaxy smartphones and promote sustainable practices. Samsung is aiming to create a secure and easy process for customers looking to recycle their smartphones, further advancing its environmental sustainability goals.
