Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Flip owners warned: trade in now or lose up to 15% in value

As Samsung unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 yesterday 9 July 2025, current Fold and Flip owners face a financial dilemma. Data from American trade-in enabler SellCell reveals that resale values for older models can drop by up to 15% within just eight weeks of a new model launch. According to SellCell’s analysis, trade-in prices for Galaxy Z Fold and Flip devices remain relatively stable up until launch day. For example, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 (256GB) even saw a slight value gain of 0.5% in the two months before the Flip 6 launched. However, this trend reverses quickly post-launch. Within eight weeks of the Flip 6 announcement, the Flip 5 lost € 55 in value, a 14.4% drop. In general, we need not to overestimate the market. According to a source, only 2% of the total primary mobile market are currently foldables. That said only 2.4 million foldable smartphones will be traded in over the next 12 months.

Samsung Galaxy Flip 6 and Fold 6 also at risk

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 (256GB) is projected to lose nearly € 65 by early September, a 14.4% drop from its pre-launch value. Even the newer Fold 6 (1TB) could decline by € 33, or 4.2%. These forecasts suggest that even the latest models aren’t immune to immediate post-launch depreciation.

Older devices lose up to € 65

Historically, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 (1TB) dropped €  63 in value just two months after the Fold 5 launched. The Fold 4 (256GB) also lost €63, representing an 11.4% dip. On average, foldable phones lose between 8% and 10% of their trade-in value in the eight weeks after a new model becomes available.

Why timing of trade-in matters

SellCell’s data shows that timing is everything for consumers and traders alike. The value of foldables tends to stay steady before launch but drops sharply afterwards. This makes now the most profitable time for Fold and Flip owners to act and for traders to hang in there for just a bit as waiting just a few weeks could cost consumers an average residual value of € 41, with losses of up to € 65 depending on the model. A loss for consumers but a win for traders.

After launch

Past trends indicate that older models will see immediate price erosion following the announcement, reinforcing the urgency for current owners to consider trading in their devices before the reveal.

Conclusion: trade in while values hold or hold to buy until it drops

For owners of Galaxy Z Fold and Flip phones, the next few days may be the final opportunity to lock in top trade-in prices. With a potential 15% drop in value looming, acting now could mean the difference between getting full resale value or losing out on € 60 or more. For the market be patient as trade-in prices will come down sharply.
