Amazon’s Right Now Climate Fund supports climate resilience through European nature-based projects

Amazon’s Right Now Climate Fund (RNCF), launched in 2019 with a $100 million commitment, aims to strengthen community resilience to climate change and promote biodiversity through nature-based solutions worldwide. This fund supports a range of initiatives across Europe, from woodland preservation in Belgium to peatland restoration in Ireland, contributing to Amazon’s broader goals of decarbonization and environmental sustainability.

Nature-based solutions for a sustainable future

Nature-based solutions under the RNCF involve activities like conservation, restoration, and sustainable land and ocean management, which capture and store carbon while preserving biodiversity. These initiatives offer broad benefits, including wildlife habitat conservation, water quality improvements, and flood risk reduction, which help communities better adapt to climate change.

European initiatives driving impact

Belgium: Brabantse Wouden National Park

In Belgium, the RNCF funds the creation of the Brabantse Wouden National Park, preserving ancient UNESCO-listed woodlands. This project protects Belgium’s historic forests, enhancing biodiversity and promoting sustainable tourism.

France: land restoration with Fonds Nature 2050

Collaborating with Fonds Nature 2050, the RNCF supports the restoration of 600,000m² of land across France, equivalent to 80 football fields. The initiative aims to restore local wildlife habitats and ensure long-term ecosystem resilience.

Germany: urban biodiversity enhancement

In Germany, the RNCF works with The Nature Conservancy to improve urban biodiversity by introducing climate-resilient plants and pollinator-friendly species in cities, supporting urban green spaces and increasing resilience to extreme weather.

Ireland: peatland restoration

Through a partnership with The Nature Trust, the RNCF restores 500 hectares of Atlantic blanket bog in Ireland. Peatlands are vital for carbon storage and biodiversity, and their restoration plays a crucial role in combating climate change.

Italy: green corridor with Parco Italia

In Italy, the RNCF and Parco Italia are establishing a green corridor by planting 70,000 trees and shrubs. This project fosters biodiversity and strengthens local ecosystems, creating more resilient habitats.

Netherlands: seaweed farm within offshore wind farm

RNCF’s collaboration with North Sea Farmers has led to the development of Europe’s first commercial-scale seaweed farm within a Dutch offshore wind farm. This initiative not only promotes carbon sequestration but also utilizes previously unused space between turbines.

Spain: environmental education with Green Helmets

In Spain, the RNCF partners with UNITAR to educate students on nature-based climate solutions through the Green Helmets program. Recent efforts include planting over 20,000 trees in fire-affected Sierra Bermeja, supporting reforestation and climate education.

United Kingdom: species habitat restoration

The UK project, part of the Rewild London Fund, focuses on boosting populations of species like harvest mice and bees. By creating and restoring habitats, RNCF aims to reverse species decline. Additionally, 450,000 trees have been planted across six towns in collaboration with The Woodland Trust.

Expanding global efforts

Beyond Europe, RNCF supports climate resilience projects globally, such as an Agroforestry and Restoration Accelerator in Brazil and a carbon sequestration program for family forest owners in the USA’s Appalachian region.

Choosing impactful projects

RNCF selects projects based on their environmental benefits and community impact. As RNCF continues to expand, additional investments in climate resilience and sustainability projects will be announced, emphasizing Amazon’s commitment to nature-based solutions.
