Vodafone: refurbished and used smartphones gain gifting appeal in Germany

Refurbished smartphones are gradually gaining acceptance as a gift option, according to recent German consumer research commissioned by Vodafone. While new devices still dominate seasonal purchasing, professionally refurbished smartphones are increasingly considered a viable and attractive alternative, particularly during the holiday period. The survey indicates that only 8% of respondents have already given or received a refurbished smartphone as a gift. However, interest significantly outweighs actual adoption, highlighting a clear gap between awareness and behaviour within the secondary mobile market.

Strong interest despite low adoption

The most striking finding is that 40% of respondents state they would be pleased to receive a refurbished smartphone as a Christmas gift. This figure underlines the latent demand for professionally refurbished devices, even if they have not yet become mainstream gift products. Beyond seasonal gifting, the data suggests that refurbished smartphones are close to a broader tipping point, provided that trust, availability, and clarity around quality standards continue to improve.

Price advantage drives demand

Cost efficiency remains the primary motivation for consumers considering refurbished smartphones. According to the survey, 47% of respondents identify price performance as the most compelling advantage, with refurbished devices costing up to 70% less than new equivalents. This price positioning is particularly relevant in an environment of persistent consumer price sensitivity. Refurbished smartphones enable access to premium models, including Apple iPhone devices, at significantly reduced price points without sacrificing functionality.

Sustainability ranks second

Environmental considerations rank as the second most important purchasing driver. Around one third of respondents cite sustainability as a key reason for choosing refurbished smartphones. By extending device lifecycles, refurbished smartphones help reduce electronic waste and limit the demand for newly manufactured hardware. This alignment with circular economy principles is increasingly resonating with consumers who seek to balance technology usage with environmental responsibility.

Appeal among key demographics

Interest in refurbished smartphones is strongest among younger consumers, households with children, students, and individuals aged 30 to 39. Sustainability focused consumers also show above average openness to refurbished devices. These demographic trends suggest that future growth will be driven by digitally native and family oriented buyers who prioritize value and environmental impact over owning the latest model.

Vodafone expands refurbished offering

Since September 2025, Vodafone has operated an online refurbished smartphone shop in partnership with French refurbisher Recommerce Group. The platform offers more than 500 professionally refurbished models, each tested and supplied with a 24 month warranty. The offering is available without the requirement to sign a mobile contract, lowering barriers for consumers who want flexibility when purchasing refurbished devices.

Trade in supports circularity

Vodafone also continues to expand its Re Trade program, allowing customers to sell used smartphones at guaranteed prices. Promotional trade in bonuses of up to € 240 are available until 8 January 2026 for selected models, including Google Pixel, Xiaomi, and Fairphone devices. These initiatives aim to stimulate both supply and demand within the refurbished ecosystem.

Germany lags internationally

Despite growing awareness, Germany remains behind other countries in refurbished smartphone adoption. A separate Vodafone Institute study published in September 2025 places Germany last in international comparisons for refurbished smartphone usage. The study confirms that once consumers adopt refurbished devices, they are likely to remain loyal to this purchasing model, reinforcing the long-term growth potential for the sector.
