An increasing number of consumers in Germany are turning to refurbished smartphones as a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to new devices. According to a recent survey by the digital association Bitkom, 18% of Germans have purchased a professionally refurbished smartphone. Additionally, 30% of respondents have bought a used device from a private seller, indicating a growing acceptance of used electronics.
Cost and sustainability are key factors
The primary motivation for buying refurbished or used smartphones is financial savings, with 49% of buyers citing lower prices as their main reason. Sustainability is also a major factor, as 42% of respondents value the environmental benefits of reusing devices. Furthermore, 39% aim to reduce the consumption of raw materials such as cobalt and lithium by opting for used options.
Concerns about used devices remain
Despite the rising popularity, many consumers remain hesitant about buying used smartphones. More than half (55%) prefer a device in perfect technical and aesthetic condition, while 47% always want the latest model. Concerns about warranties (40%) and software updates (39%) also play a role, as does data security (20%). Additionally, 10% of respondents perceive used smartphones as unhygienic.
More companies promote used and refurbished options
Bitkom CEO Dr. Bernhard Rohleder emphasizes the benefits of refurbished smartphones, stating that they help reduce e-waste and conserve resources. He notes that many professional sellers and major manufacturers offer high-quality refurbished devices, making them a viable option for consumers who do not necessarily need the latest model or mind minor cosmetic flaws.
