French refurbisher Recommerce unveils the results of the 8th edition of its annual Barometer on “the second-hand mobile market,” conducted in partnership with Kantar across 13 European countries. We focus on the French result today. The French market for refurbished smartphones has reached a milestone. In 2025, more than one in five smartphones (22%) in use is second-hand, up from 20% in 2024. This marks a significant shift, as only 7% of devices were second-hand in 2018. The trend highlights a steady move towards refurbished devices, driven by consumer awareness and cost savings.
Rising interest among young consumers
More than half of French consumers (53%) are considering purchasing a refurbished smartphone, with interest particularly strong among younger buyers. Among 16-34-year-olds, 60% are open to the idea, indicating a generational shift towards sustainability. For parents, refurbished devices are an attractive option, with 60% reporting they have bought a second-hand phone for their children aged 11-18.
Price remains the key motivator
Cost is the main driver behind the purchase of refurbished smartphones, with 72% of consumers citing price as their primary reason. Environmental concerns are also growing in importance, with 36% of buyers motivated by sustainability factors.
Consumers prefer trusted retailers
Trust remains a key factor in the refurbished market. Nearly 30% of consumers prefer to buy from mobile network operators, followed by specialized electronics retailers (23%) and dedicated refurbishment platforms (20%). This trend underlines the importance of guarantees, expert advice, and after-sales services.
Challenges remain: warranty and durability concerns
Despite the market's stabilization, some consumers still hesitate due to concerns over warranty and durability. While 30% choose refurbished devices because they come with a guarantee, 28% avoid them due to a perceived lack of warranty. Additionally, 39% express uncertainty about product lifespan, signaling the need for better consumer education on refurbished quality standards.
Trade-in programs and market structure
According to Augustin Becquet, CEO of Recommerce, the stabilization of the refurbished market presents an opportunity to refine trade-in programs and improve local supply chains. With 40% of consumers willing to resell their devices but 37% still holding onto them, there is room for growth in device trade-ins. Becquet emphasizes the importance of structuring buyback programs to reduce dependence on imports and enhance trust in refurbished products.
