The first half of 2025 has been turbulent for the global smartphone industry. New device markets faced challenges from tariffs and macroeconomic uncertainty, while the secondary smartphone sector proved more resilient. According to Counterpoint Research’s Global Secondary Smartphone Market report for H1 2025, refurbished sales grew 3% year-on-year despite a volatile first half.
Global sales growth remains steady
Global refurbished smartphone sales grew steadily, overcoming weaker results in Q1 and market volatility in Q2. Counterpoint forecasts stronger growth in H2 2025 as supply stabilises and demand accelerates in both mature and emerging markets. The industry expects the second half of the year to contribute the majority of annual growth.

Tariffs disrupt US secondary markets
The United States experienced the most significant trade and pricing disruptions due to new tariffs. While these created domestic uncertainties, global secondary markets largely absorbed the impact. This underlines the growing maturity and adaptability of the refurbished smartphone ecosystem worldwide.
Regional performance highlights growth
Japan led growth among mature markets with a 5% year-on-year increase, while the US and Europe remained flat. Emerging regions such as Africa, India and Southeast Asia saw stronger demand, with these markets now driving overall expansion of the refurbished industry.
Apple strengthens its secondary market lead
Apple iPhone models dominated refurbished and used sales, recording 7% year-on-year growth in H1 2025. In emerging markets, Apple posted an impressive 12% growth rate. Samsung also performed well, increasing its share by 4% in mature markets, although it remained overshadowed by Apple’s strong global presence.
Pricing trends reflect rising demand
Average selling prices (ASPs) of refurbished smartphones climbed closer to those of new devices in several regions. This demonstrates that buyers are increasingly willing to pay more for quality refurbished Apple iPhones and other premium devices. Meanwhile, the “As Is” category of used smartphones expanded even faster, rising 10% year-on-year.
Outlook for the second half of 2025
Counterpoint expects stronger growth in H2 2025 as economic conditions stabilise, consumer confidence improves, and refurbished devices maintain their appeal as cost-effective, sustainable alternatives to new smartphones. Both mature and emerging markets are positioned to benefit from this momentum.
