Refurbed, the online marketplace for refurbished electronics, has rolled out a new trade-in service across six European countries: Italy, Germany, Ireland, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Austria. This initiative is part of Refurbed’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, aiming to reduce electronic waste by extending the life cycles of devices. The service allows customers to trade in their old smartphones for up to €1,000, offering a seamless process for consumers to contribute to environmental efforts. At this stage it is unclear if Refurbed is using their own proprietary system or a third-party. Refurbed hit the milestone of selling € 1 billion worth of refurbished technology across their European markets in June 2023.
How the trade-in service works
The new trade-in service supports devices from eight major manufacturers, including Apple, Samsung, OnePlus, and Huawei. Customers can easily select the model they wish to sell on refurbed.ie, receive an offer within minutes based on the device’s condition, and ship the product using a free shipping label provided by Refurbed. Once dispatched, the phone is sent to one of the company’s accredited refurbishers, where it gets a second life.
We believe this is a strategic move for Refurbed. As a well-established brand with access to millions of customers, launching a trade-in service should seamlessly attract their growing user base. However, the success of this initiative will largely depend on how Refurbed’s trade-in pricing stacks up against competitors and how user-friendly their trade-in process is for customers.
A step towards reducing e-waste
Refurbed’s mission is to make sustainability a core element of their business model. By introducing this trade-in service, they are working toward reducing the demand for new resources and supporting the circular economy. With electronic waste on the rise globally, such efforts are crucial in creating a more sustainable future for the tech industry.
