Recommerce Group, a European enabler of in trade-in, refurbishment, and resale of used devices, has officially become an Industry member of the GSMA, the global association representing the mobile technology industry. To the best of our knowledge, this marks the first time a secondary market player has joined the organization. Since 2009, Recommerce has played a key role in extending the lifecycle of mobile devices, particularly smartphones in Europe. The company operates buyback programs for telecom operators, oversees device refurbishment through data erasure, testing, and repairs, and resells devices, significantly reducing electronic waste and advancing sustainability efforts in the telecom sector and was founder of EU refurbish pressure group Eurefas.
Strengthening industry-wide sustainability
The GSMA brings together telecom operators, device manufacturers, and technology providers. Recommerce’s membership reinforces its mission to integrate sustainability across the entire mobile value chain. For 15 years, the company has positioned itself as a Circular Economy enabler, aligning with the GSMA’s sustainability objectives, including contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Expanding opportunities through GSMA
Through the GSMA’s vast network, Recommerce will gain access to global mobile operators and industry leaders. This collaboration aims to foster new innovations throughout the device lifecycle, leveraging Recommerce’s expertise in trade-in, refurbishment, and resale, ensuring maximum value retention and extended product lifespans.
Driving environmental impact reduction
The GSMA is at the forefront of tackling climate change, electronic waste, and resource depletion. Recommerce will supplement these efforts, contributing to the broader global agenda of achieving net-zero emissions and promoting a more sustainable future.
