As Apple prepares to reveal its iPhone 17 on 9 September 2025 during its annual Keynote, Recommerce Group, a European enabler of trade-in, refurbishment and resale, is assessing the impact of this launch on the refurbished smartphone market. According to the company, every new Apple iPhone release triggers predictable trends that strengthen the appeal of refurbished devices.
Prices drop on older refurbished models
For more than 16 years, Recommerce has observed that the arrival of a new Apple iPhone consistently lowers the average resale price of earlier refurbished models by 10 to 15%. This makes devices such as the refurbished Apple iPhone 14 or 15 more affordable in the weeks after the announcement, fueling interest among cost-conscious buyers.
Trade-ins increase significantly
The company also highlights that trade-ins rise by more than 50% compared to previous months following a new launch. This surge in trade-in activity helps fund new purchases, whether consumers opt for the latest Apple iPhone or a refurbished model. In some cases, trade-in value can reach up to €800, creating a significant boost in purchasing power.
Strong demand for recent models
With the expected starting price of the Apple iPhone 17 close to €1000 and higher-end versions potentially exceeding €1900, refurbished models provide an accessible alternative. For example, a refurbished Apple iPhone 14 can be purchased for under €400, representing strong value for money.
A sustainable and transparent option
Recommerce stresses that refurbished smartphones not only offer savings but also sustainability benefits. Choosing refurbished avoids the extraction of 154 kg of raw materials compared to producing a new device. Ab Seghrouchni, Country Manager Netherlands at Recommerce Group, underlines that Dutch consumers increasingly demand transparent warranties, secure data erasure, and reliable after-sales service. Recommerce is therefore investing in local partnerships with retailers and telecom providers to ensure smooth and trusted trade-ins.
Industry challenges and consumer protection
Despite growing adoption, the refurbishment industry faces issues including VAT fraud, unpaid eco-contributions and sales of non-compliant products. These practices erode consumer trust and harm the broader sector. Recommerce advises buyers to verify certifications, warranty terms, and compliance before purchasing refurbished products. Its own devices undergo 56 technical checks, use CE-marked parts, and are covered by a 24-month warranty equal to that of a new phone.
