Proparco invests in Kenian refurbisher Badili to boost growth

French Proparco has granted Badili a €370,000 debt facility through the Bridge by Digital Africa initiative. This funding aims to enhance access to affordable refurbished smartphones, improve digital connectivity, and contribute to sustainability efforts in Kenya.

Bridge by Digital Africa explained

The Bridge by Digital Africa facility, supported by Digital Africa and implemented by Proparco, provides young African businesses with bridging finance for up to 24 months. This support helps startups accelerate their development between investment rounds.

Badili promotes sustainability in Africa

Badili plays a key role in reducing electronic waste by repurposing and distributing used smartphones. By limiting the need for new resources, the company supports environmental sustainability and promotes the circular economy in Africa.

Smartphone access boosts economic resilience

Expanding smartphone ownership enables low-income communities to access vital online services, including digital payments, education, and healthcare. Badili’s initiative fosters economic growth by increasing digital participation in underserved regions.

Leadership emphasizes project impact

Rishabh Lawania, Founder and CEO of Badili, highlighted the importance of Proparco’s trust, stating that it validates Badili’s mission of making smartphone ownership accessible across Africa. Fabrice Perez, head of the Venture Capital Division at Proparco, praised the initiative for its sustainability and economic potential.

Proparco strengthens commitment to sustainability

This investment reinforces Proparco’s mission to support projects that reduce electronic waste, promote responsible resource use, and enhance digital inclusion. Proparco remains focused on funding initiatives that drive environmental and socio-economic progress in Africa.
