Orange Middle East and Africa (OMEA) has taken a significant step in its environmental commitment by converting 10,000 telecom sites to solar power across its 17 markets in Africa and the Middle East. This transition is not merely an adaptation but a key component of Orange’s strategy to enhance the resilience of its infrastructure against growing energy challenges.
Solar power’s tangible impact on the ground
In Liberia, where the electrification rate is a low 12%, the benefits of this conversion are already evident. Jabateh Dweh Charles, Power Manager Operations at Orange Liberia, reports that 77% of the operator’s sites are now powered by solar energy. This shift has led to a 25% reduction in fuel consumption in 2023, showcasing the effectiveness of solar energy in reducing operational costs and emissions.
Ambitious targets for a sustainable future
The solar conversion initiative is more than impressive numbers; it is part of a broader, long-term vision. Orange aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2025, with an even more ambitious target of 45% by 2030. These goals are central to its strategic plans, “Lead the Future” and “Net Zero Carbon,” underscoring OMEA’s commitment to integrating renewable energy into its operations and promoting sustainability.
Comprehensive strategy to cut carbon footprint
OMEA’s 2023 CSR report, titled “Seeds of Change,” highlights the company’s intensified efforts to adopt cleaner energy sources. Compared to 2022, the use of renewable energy has surged by 70%, with renewables now comprising 32.8% of OMEA’s total energy consumption. This achievement is also a result of partnerships with specialized energy service companies (ESCOs), enabling the company to save up to 55 million liters of fuel annually.
Collaborative efforts for energy transition
The collaboration with energy partners has been instrumental in OMEA’s transition to renewable energy. By leveraging the expertise of ESCOs, OMEA ensures efficient energy usage, contributing to significant fuel savings and a reduction in carbon emissions. This approach not only supports the company’s environmental goals but also boosts its operational efficiency across its vast network of telecom sites.
