Orange Belgium launches new webshop for refurbished smartphones with Recommerce partnership

Orange Belgium is expanding its commitment to sustainability and responsible tech consumption with the launch of a new webshop for refurbished smartphones. Partnering with Recommerce, a leader in the circular economy, Orange Belgium is set to offer an extensive selection of over 8,500 refurbished smartphone models. This new initiative is part of Orange Belgium’s ongoing efforts to reduce its environmental impact while bridging the digital divide.

Expanding the refurbished smartphone market

The new online platform allows customers to choose from a wide variety of refurbished devices, all of which come with a two-year warranty. This move enhances Orange Belgium's position as a leader in the refurbished smartphone sector in Belgium, supporting its "Lead the Future" strategy. This strategy focuses on three key pillars: innovation, responsible business practices, and environmental sustainability. By offering a range of high-quality refurbished smartphones, Orange Belgium strengthens its efforts to reduce CO2 emissions while contributing to the circular economy.

Sustainability at the core of Orange Belgium's strategy

Orange Belgium's commitment to sustainability is evident in its "Re Program," which was launched in 2022. This initiative revolves around four "Re’s": Repair, Refurbish, Recycle, and Return. The company encourages customers to extend the lifespan of their devices by repairing them, refurbishing them for resale, and recycling valuable raw materials from non-reusable phones. Customers can also return their old phones in exchange for a voucher. In 2023 alone, Orange Belgium collected 37,000 mobile devices and sold 13,500 refurbished smartphones as part of the program.

A step forwards

The environmental impact of refurbished smartphones is significant. For every device sold, Orange Belgium helps reduce CO2 emissions by an average of 50 kg per phone. Additionally, for each device collected, €2 is donated to the Natagora/Natuurpunt environmental protection program, which focuses on planting trees and hedges in Belgium. This initiative not only helps the planet but also provides an affordable, eco-friendly alternative for consumers looking to reduce their environmental footprint.

AI and operational effficiency

Leveraging AI for operational efficiency, Orange Belgium aims to improve logistics and ensure that the refurbished smartphones meet the highest standards of quality. Recommerce has been at the forefront of promoting circular economy practices in the tech industry for 15 years, according to Orange Belgium. Their involvement ensures that each refurbished device is certified, offering customers peace of mind while helping to further Orange Belgium's ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals.

Looking ahead

The new webshop represents a significant milestone for Orange Belgium as it continues to grow its presence in the refurbished smartphone sector. The company’s goal is clear: to become the operator with the widest range of refurbished smartphones in Belgium, making quality, affordable, and sustainable tech accessible to more customers.
