Dutch operator Odido launches new trade in programme with Assurant

Odido has introduced Toestelinruil, a refreshed trade in programme developed in collaboration with Assurant. The initiative is designed to give both customers and non Odido customers a straightforward way to hand in their old phone. Users can apply the device value as a discount toward their next purchase or choose to have the amount deposited directly into their bank account. And this ‘dual’ set up is quite unique within operators and retail trade-in schemes. All traded devices are reused when possible or recycled responsibly, supporting a more sustainable lifecycle for mobile technology. This is not the first collaboration between Odido and Assurant. Earlier we revealed that Assurant launched device insurance in the Netherlands. It is almost natural that both are connected now.

Clear and simple user journey

The trade-in process focuses on clarity. Many consumers keep unused phones at home without knowing their current value. Through Odido’s online self-service tool, users can check an estimated trade in value quickly and easily. If guidance is required, customers can visit an Odido Shop for personal assistance. This combination of digital and in store support delivers a predictable and transparent experience.

Instant valuation in store

In physical shops, Odido employees assess the final device value on the spot. Customers can immediately use the determined value toward a new purchase, eliminating waiting periods. For those who prefer direct payment, a postal option is available via PostNL. Once the device is received and checked, payments are issued within two working days, offering clarity and certainty throughout the entire process.

Fair prices without surprises

The programme aims to avoid scenarios where customers receive an initially high offer that is later reduced after inspection. Odido instead provides realistic valuations that match the true condition of the device. In line with this approach, the company avoids labels such as as good as new, which rarely reflect the actual condition of traded devices. This method keeps expectations clear and reinforces transparency.

Supporting a sustainable device lifecycle

By reusing or recycling traded phones, Odido contributes to a reduction in the use of new raw materials and supports a more circular device chain. Fewer newly manufactured devices are needed when existing models are kept in circulation for longer. The company views trade-in as a concrete step toward lowering the environmental impact associated with mobile technology.

Ongoing commitment to responsible technology

Odido emphasises its goal of improving services while reducing environmental impact. According to the company, The scheme reflects that mission by encouraging consumers to turn in unused devices that still hold value. Assurant, which collaborates on the programme, is one of the largest global resellers of used smartphones with annual sales of roughly 22 to 25 million units. Odido’s trade in attach rate has historically been lower than the European average of around 5%, as reported by CCS Insight, and the company aims to strengthen its contribution through this renewed offering.

Strengthening sustainable choices

With trade-in, Odido expands its efforts to offer accessible and responsible technology. The company continues to invest in services that reflect what customers need while contributing to a more sustainable future for the mobile sector.
