Since its relaunch in October 2023, O2 Recycle for Business has helped companies across the UK cash in on nearly € 385,000 by trading in unused smartphones and tablets. The initiative, spearheaded by Virgin Media O2, offers businesses the opportunity to clear out their drawers and shelves of unused devices while making a positive environmental impact.
Almost 45,000 devices saved
According to the network, the programme has already prevented nearly 45,000 devices from becoming electronic waste—a significant achievement. However, a closer look at the figures raises some questions. Based on the total trade-in value and volume, UK businesses are receiving an average of just € 8.55 per device when using O2 Recycle for Business. That’s seems like a modest return, which may not offer a strong financial incentive for some organisations to participate. But we need to understand that this programme is not aimed in getting highest return of residual value but saving unwanted devices from landfill through recycling and not reusing.
Each traded-in item is securely data wiped before being repaired, refurbished, and resold—or recycled responsibly with zero parts sent to landfill. The service is available to businesses of all sizes, regardless of their mobile provider.
Making recycling hassle-free
According to the operator O2 Recycle for Business simplifies the recycling process. Companies can register multiple devices in one go, receive free courier collection, or even use a QR code system to support remote employees sending in devices from home. It’s a streamlined solution that removes logistical friction from sustainable business practices.
Flexible financial options for companies
Companies choosing to recycle through O2 Recycle for Business can opt to receive cash back, use the credit to upgrade to new Apple iPhones or other smartphones, or donate up to 100% of the value to Virgin Media O2’s charity partner, the Good Things Foundation. These donations support digital inclusion projects across the UK.
Reducing carbon emissions together
The initiative contributes to Virgin Media O2’s broader sustainability strategy—Better Connections Plan—aiming to facilitate 10 million circular actions by the end of 2025. By diverting old tech from waste streams and back into use, O2 Recycle for Business also helps companies reduce their Scope 3 supply chain carbon emissions.
More businesses could benefit
Despite the programme’s growing success, Virgin Media O2 estimates that there are still 11.8 million unused business devices sitting idle across the UK. These represent untapped value and a growing environmental risk. O2 Recycle for Business is helping to change that, one refurbished device at a time.
