In March 2025, the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management will launch an enhanced version of the National Repairers Register. This initiative, set to go live on 20 March during the National Circular Economy Conference, aims to provide consumers with a more user-friendly platform, improved information, and a broader network of skilled repairers, aligning with forthcoming European legislation.
Enhancements to the register
The National Repairers Register, initially introduced in April 2023, is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, Techniek Nederland, and the Central Register of Technology. The positive media coverage following its launch accelerated its development, leading to the inclusion of manufacturer-authorised repair companies. Previously, only repairers meeting the Electrotechnical Repair Company Recognition Scheme were listed. This expansion ensures better nationwide coverage with more repair businesses.
The platform has also been refined to assist consumers in making sustainable choices. The website now offers essential information on extending product lifespan, warranty details, and sustainability practices.
Purpose of the register
This initiative reflects the commitment of the government and the electronics industry to enhance the availability of repair information. It serves as the Netherlands' response to the 'Right to Repair' proposal, which the European Parliament adopted by a significant majority in April 2024. The goal is to make it easier for consumers to opt for repairing their devices, promoting sustainability.
The register features qualified repair companies specialising in product categories covered by European Ecodesign regulations, including:
- Household washing machines and washer-dryers
- Refrigerators and freezers
- Displays, including televisions
- Dishwashers
- Welding equipment
As the European Union continues to expand the list of product groups under Ecodesign rules, the register will adapt accordingly. Additionally, the listed companies also repair consumer electronics not yet covered by these regulations.
