Meta launches trade-in program for smart glasses

Meta has launched a trade-in program for select smart glasses, enabling customers to receive discounts when exchanging older devices. Earlier this year, the company unveiled the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 smart glasses, alongside Oakley models and the Meta Ray-Ban Display. These devices aim to combine style and functionality, enhancing the overall wearable tech experience. Currently, the trade-in program appears to be available only to US customers. While it is encouraging to see trade-in schemes expanding into new categories, the relatively small size of the smart glasses market means the overall impact is likely to remain limited.

Pilot program offers limited discounts

Starting 14 November and running until December 31, Meta’s pilot trade-in program provides discounts up to € 113. Eligible devices include Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1 and Gen 2, Oakley Meta Vanguard, and Oakley Meta HSTN models. The program excludes limited edition and refurbished glasses as well as the Meta Ray-Ban Display.

Apple and Samsung devices are eligible

Meta’s initiative extends beyond its own hardware. Customers can trade in certain Apple and Samsung products, including Apple AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 3 and 4, Beats Studio Buds+, Beats Powerbeats Pro 2, Beats Fit Pro, and Samsung Galaxy Buds3 series. This approach allows users to leverage older gadgets toward new Meta glasses.

Purchasing directly from Meta is required

To use the trade-in offer, purchases must be made via Meta’s official store. Some users report needing multiple browsers to view the trade-in option, which appears when adding an eligible device to the shopping cart.

Meta joins broader trade-in trend

Other tech giants like Apple, Samsung, and Google also provide trade-in options, though Apple notably excludes AirPods and earbuds from its program. Meta’s pilot aims to encourage upgrades while managing e-waste responsibly.

Discount could make upgrades attractive

The Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 retail at € 379 in the US, meaning a maximum € 113 trade-in discount significantly reduces the purchase cost. For existing Gen 1 owners, upgrading could be more financially appealing, potentially increasing adoption of Meta’s second-generation smart glasses.

Future of wearable trade-ins remains uncertain

While the program is temporary and selective, Meta’s initiative demonstrates growing interest in sustainable device replacement. Observers will watch whether trade-in programs become standard for wearables, similar to smartphones and tablets.
