MediaMarktSaturn drives sustainability with trade-in programs and repair initiatives

A key element of MediaMarktSaturn’s sustainability efforts is its successful trade-in program, in partnership with Foxway Group. In the last financial year alone, the entire group traded in 424,000 devices. Customers can exchange their used electronics, regardless of age or condition, for gift vouchers. This initiative not only helps extend the lifespan of electronic devices but also contributes to reducing e-waste. On average, Europe’s largest retailer trades in over 1,100 products every day—an impressive figure. However, when broken down to a store level, this equates to just one device traded in per store each day. Together with Apple, MediaMarktSaturn operates the largest trade-in program in Europe, though there’s still significant potential for growth.

MediaMarktSaturn’s role in the circular economy

MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group, Europe’s leading consumer electronics retailer, is challenging misconceptions about the industry by championing sustainability and the circular economy. While best known for selling the latest gadgets, the company is equally dedicated to empowering customers to make sustainable choices when buying, using, and recycling their electronics. Headquartered in Ingolstadt, Germany, MediaMarktSaturn operates under its flagship brands, MediaMarkt and Saturn, across more than 13 countries with over 1,000 stores and a strong e-commerce presence.

Other sustainable initiatives

There are two main ways to extend the lifespan of consumer electronics: implementing a successful trade-in program, like MediaMarktSaturn, and offering easy access to repair services. In Germany, we discovered Smartcheck, a service run by the German service provider dis-connect. Customers simply scan a barcode, and the system quickly performs a thorough diagnosis of their mobile phone, providing insights into its status. Based on the results, users can improve performance, opt for repairs, or choose to sell their device if they no longer wish to keep it. Beyond trade-ins, MediaMarktSaturn is diversifying its revenue streams with operational services and solutions, which grew by 17% last financial year. These offerings include device insurance, extended warranties, and repair services—appealing to customers who prioritize sustainability.
