MediaMarktSaturn, Europe’s largest retailer, is scaling up its commitment to the circular economy by deepening its refurbished device strategy. The retail group’s parent company, CECONOMY, reaffirmed its belief that “every device deserves a second life,” with CEO Karsten Wildberger citing sustainability as a long-term value rather than a passing trend. With growing consumer demand for sustainable options, refurbished tech is not just an alternative—it’s a preferred choice for many.
Enhanced shopping experience for consumers
MediaMarktSaturn has revamped its refurbished offering with a new user interface that improves navigation and visibility. Customers now see refurbished alternatives directly on product pages for new devices. Refurbished goods from marketplace sellers also come with clear quality labels—Excellent, Very Good, or Good—based on cosmetic wear and battery health. This level of transparency helps buyers feel confident about the value and functionality of what they’re purchasing.
Germany leads with bold strategy
In its home market, Germany, MediaMarktSaturn is taking the next step: returned devices are being refurbished using its own “Refurbished Playbook” and then resold via the marketplace. In a unique twist, its physical stores are now acting as marketplace sellers. This move brings broader reach and greater customer choice while maximizing inventory lifecycle.
Internal shift supports circular goals
The company is also setting an internal example. Since early 2025, all employee devices at international administrative locations have been replaced with refurbished ones including the one of Karsten Wilberger, as shown in the picture. This effort spans all job levels and further underlines MediaMarktSaturn’s deepening commitment to sustainability, not just for customers, but within its own operations. MediaMarktSaturn walks the talk.
