Largest Dutch e-tailer Bol expands refurbished electronics offering

Bol has significantly expanded its refurbished product range. The number of product categories has more than doubled, now next to smartphones also desktops, monitors, gaming consoles and accessories. The group of sellers active on the platform has also grown, with twenty partners currently offering refurbished products through bol. SecondaryMarket.news heard from sources that bol is starting to allow non-Dutch merchants on their marketplace as well. This phased expansion allows for controlled growth, ensuring that quality, customer satisfaction and trust remain at the core. Next step for bol would be to start offering a serious trade-in scheme as well.

Gradual scaling since November 2024

Since introducing refurbished products in November 2024, Bol has taken a step-by-step approach to expansion. Oscar Hundman, Chief E-commerce Officer, explains: “We see strong growth month after month, but we deliberately opt for gradual scaling. Only partners that meet our strict quality standards can become refurbished sellers. This process takes more time than admitting regular sellers, but it ensures we maintain a high bar. At Bol, reliability and quality always come first, and our refurbished range reflects that. Customers can shop with confidence.”

Consumer interest continues to rise based on affordability

Interest in refurbished products is steadily increasing. Research among 1,300 electronics buyers in the Netherlands and Flanders shows that two out of three consumers would consider refurbished. Smartphones, tablets and desktops are currently the most popular categories, while gaming consoles and cameras are quickly gaining traction. Price remains the leading motivation, with 80% of consumers citing lower cost as the main reason. Sustainability follows at 48%. However, doubts remain, as 36% of respondents worry about product lifespan and 30% question whether refurbished items will function properly.

Satisfaction levels match new products

Bol’s latest data shows that customer satisfaction with refurbished products matches that of new items. The number of customer inquiries is at the same level, while return rates remain within similar margins. To build further confidence, all refurbished products sold through Bol come with a two-year warranty.

Refurbished part of back to school

Bol integrates refurbished products into its main assortment, presenting them as a full-fledged alternative to new items. This summer, refurbished electronics are also part of Bol’s Back to School campaign “De winkel van soepele starters.” Under the tagline “Zo goed als nieuw, maar dan opnieuw,” refurbished products are positioned as affordable and conscious choices for students and families preparing for the school year. Phones, tablets and laptops are highlighted as the most relevant products for back-to-school shopping.

Oscar Hundman concludes: “The start of a school year can be costly. From new supplies to essential laptops, expenses add up quickly. Why buy everything new? Our refurbished products are as good as new but at a friendlier price. Smart for your budget and a more sustainable choice. Our goal is to make refurbished available in every category possible.”
