In a significant step toward sustainability, KPN, the Dutch mobile phone operator, has started sourcing electricity from a local solar park, marking an important partnership with energy supplier Eneco. This solar park is the largest of its kind operated by Eneco.
Solar park is officially operational
The construction of this solar park was completed by the end of last year, with the testing phase successfully finished. On January 1st, KPN began sourcing electricity from the park to power its fiber-optic and 5G mobile networks. This move is part of KPN’s broader commitment to reducing its environmental impact and increasing its reliance on renewable energy sources.
The solar park's features and location
Construction of the park began in February last year, and over 88,000 solar panels have now been installed. With a focus on maximizing land use and minimizing ecological impact, the park also benefits from its proximity to a wind farm, making it a dual energy-producing hub Eneco ensures that the power grid is better used, as the moments of high wind and high sunlight rarely align. This combination of solar and wind energy maximizes the sustainable energy supply, providing greater reliability and efficiency.
KPN’s renewable energy commitment
KPN’s decision to source approximately 47 gigawatt-hours of green solar energy annually from this solar park reflects the company’s dedication to sustainability. This move follows KPN’s earlier agreement with Eneco to purchase power from the Ecowende wind park, set to become operational in 2027. Together, these agreements will allow KPN to source around two-thirds of its annual energy consumption from renewable sources.
