Kantar research shows that even more Dutch consumers embrace used smartphones

The secondary smartphone market in the Netherlands is growing rapidly. According to the latest edition Recommerce’s annual barometer, conducted by Kantar across 13 European countries, 61% of Dutch consumers have already purchased a used smartphone. Notably, 38% now buy from professional sellers, an 11-point increase in just one year. This shift signals a growing preference for secure transactions, warranties, and reliability.

More consumers are considering used and refurbished devices

Consumer hesitation towards used devices is fading. The study found that 45% of Dutch consumers are considering purchasing a refurbished smartphone in the coming year, up from 39% last year. While the Dutch market is progressing, more established markets such as France are experiencing a decline in consumer interest in used smartphones.

Price remains key, but trust matters

Affordability remains the leading motivation for purchasing refurbished devices, with 62% of Dutch buyers prioritizing price. However, the Netherlands ranks lower than the European average of 66.5% on this criterion. Meanwhile, trust in warranties has risen by 10 points, with 27% of consumers citing it as a key factor. Environmental concerns, however, have declined by 15 points, showing a shift in priorities.

Retailers and operators gain consumer trust

Buying habits are evolving. While specialist retailers remain the preferred choice for 60% of consumers, telecom operators are gaining traction, increasing their share by 8 points to 59%. Conversely, marketplaces are losing ground, dropping to 35% from 37%, reflecting a shift towards more structured and secure purchasing experiences.

Dutch consumers are reselling at record rates

Resale trends are accelerating in the Netherlands. In response to economic uncertainties, 51% of Dutch consumers intend to resell their current device, surpassing the European average of 37% and nearing Switzerland's rate of 53%. A record 44% of Dutch consumers have already sold an old smartphone, marking a 9-point increase and the highest percentage among surveyed countries.

Recommerce on the opportunity

"The growing demand for refurbished smartphones in the Netherlands reflects a clear shift in consumer habits," says Ab Seghrouchni, Country Manager for the Netherlands at Recommerce. "More Dutch consumers recognize the financial benefits of choosing refurbished devices, while confidence in warranties is increasing. The rising trade-in numbers align with the broader trend of a circular economy. Online solutions should be expanded alongside in-store options, particularly for telecom providers and retailers, to strengthen their sales channels. The growing interest in reselling used devices presents a strong opportunity for companies to enhance trade-in programs and offer incentives such as discounts on new or refurbished devices."
