Italian-based Prink, known for its network of franchise stores selling printer supplies, faces significant financial difficulties. Founded in 2002, Prink expanded its services across (Southern) Europe, but has recently filed (in August) for “concordato con riserva,” a form of debt protection under Italian law, giving the company 60 days—extendable to 120 days—to propose a rescue plan. During this period, the company will be shielded from creditors, allowing management to work on recovery strategies. Latest update is that Italian court will decide on 15 October what the future of Prink and iRiparo will be. It seems that iRiparo is up for sale.
Diverse portfolio includes iRiparo repair chain
Beyond its core printer supply business, Prink oversees 13 other companies, including iRiparo, a repair chain that Prink acquired in 2017 from Italian serial entrepreneur CarloAlberto Rolando. At that stage Prink bought 51% and Rolando stayed at CEO until June 2023 when he sold remaining shares. iRiparo initially specialized in Apple iPhone repairs but has since expanded its services to include all major phone brands. With over 324 repair points across Europe, iRiparo plays a significant role in Prink's overall operations. However, the lack of manufacturer authorizations for in- and out-of-warranty repairs raises questions about the long-term viability of this division. Despite these challenges, iRiparo also sells refurbished smartphones, offering a broader service range to customers.
Challenges in a competitive repair market
The reasons behind Prink's financial distress remain unclear. Whether the issues stem from iRiparo or the printer supply business is uncertain. The repair industry, particularly in Europe, has been experiencing tough competition, with thin profit margins pressuring many businesses. In contrast, companies like Fixers and ThePhoneLab are expanding internationally, demonstrating that growth is still possible in the sector, provided the right business model is in place.
Next phase
Prink now faces a critical period where it must reassess its strategy to survive in both the printer supplies and repair markets. The coming months will reveal whether Prink can turn its fortunes around.
