Apple has recently introduced a repair program for the iPhone 14 Plus after identifying a rear camera malfunction affecting a small subset of devices manufactured between April 10, 2023, and April 28, 2024. This issue causes the rear camera on some iPhone 14 Plus devices to show no preview. Apple has assured affected users that they can receive a free repair from Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Given this timeframe, it’s likely that millions of iPhone 14 Plus devices will qualify for this free repair service.
Identifying eligible devices
To assist users in determining if their device qualifies for the repair, Apple has provided a serial number checker on their website. If eligible, users can take advantage of one of three repair options:
- Visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider: Locate a provider to handle your repair locally.
- Make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store: Users can also book an in-store appointment for direct assistance.
- Mail-in repair service through Apple Support: For those preferring remote options, Apple offers a mail-in repair service, where users can send their devices to the Apple Repair Center.
Preparing for service
Apple advises customers to back up their iPhone 14 Plus to iCloud or a computer before any service. It’s also important to note that devices with damage hindering repair, like cracked back glass, will need additional repairs beforehand, which could involve extra costs. The repair service only covers the rear camera issue; other damage may require separate repair arrangements.
Program coverage and restrictions
This repair program is globally available, but Apple may restrict service to the original country or region where the device was purchased. Additionally, the program does not extend the standard warranty of the iPhone 14 Plus, though it covers affected models for three years from the original purchase date. If users previously paid for a rear camera repair on an affected device, Apple invites them to inquire about a possible refund.
