A recent study reveals that 21% of consumers avoid purchasing secondhand items like clothing and electronics due to hygiene concerns. Issues such as lingering odors or doubts about the cleanliness of secondhand products are significant deterrents. Despite these worries, nearly half of the consumers surveyed (48%) believe that used items in good condition deserve a second life. The research, conducted by the payment platform Lightspeed among 1,000 Dutch consumers, underscores the importance of cleanliness when selling used electronics, including smartphones, to ease consumer concerns and boost trust.
The growing popularity of secondhand products
The trend of buying secondhand goods has gained momentum in recent years. In fact, 15% of consumers reported buying more used items than new ones in the past two years. On the flip side, 19% of participants revealed that they had never purchased secondhand products. As the secondhand market grows, numerous platforms and marketplaces have emerged, making it easier for consumers to recycle, donate, or resell items.
Why consumers opt for used goods
Several factors drive the increasing interest in used products. Budget-conscious buyers make up 28% of the market for secondhand goods, while 23% of consumers choose used items for their environmental benefits. The rise in secondhand shopping can be attributed to the increasing availability of both physical stores and online platforms dedicated to pre-owned goods.
Bridging the gap between environmental awareness and consumer behavior
Despite the growing popularity of secondhand shopping, there remains a gap between consumers’ environmental awareness and their purchasing habits. Ewout van Rossum, Regional Director of Retail Benelux at Lightspeed, notes that while secondhand shopping is becoming more common, there are still obstacles to closing the gap between eco-consciousness and actual buying behavior.
Ensuring hygiene in used electronics
For used electronics, including smartphones, it’s crucial that sellers address hygiene concerns. Devices must not only be thoroughly wiped of personal data but also cleaned properly to reassure consumers. By ensuring that secondhand electronics are in pristine condition, sellers can help overcome consumer fears and build trust in the growing market for used tech products.
