Users report Google Pixel 7 series battery swelling and repair issues

Several Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro users have reported battery swelling issues, causing screens and back panels to detach. These problems have surfaced on Google’s support forums and Reddit, with users expressing concerns about safety risks. While battery degradation over time is expected, such severe swelling within two years of use is unusual. Google’s support has been inconsistent in addressing these issues. Some users have received free battery replacements or device swaps, while others have been quoted over € 120 for out-of-warranty repairs. Notably, the Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are not currently covered under the free replacement program that Google introduced earlier this year for Google Pixel 7a owners. This disparity has led to mounting pressure on Google to extend the program to the entire Pixel 7 lineup.

Symptoms to watch for

Affected users have reported visible swelling of the device, bulging or separating phone covers, and significantly faster battery drain. Some have also experienced overheating or devices shutting down entirely before discovering a bulging battery. These symptoms are concerning and may pose safety hazards.

What to do if affected

If you own a Pixel 7 or 7 Pro and notice any of these symptoms, it's advisable to stop using and charging the device immediately. Contact Google Support to report the issue and seek assistance. Document the problem with photos and provide details about your device's condition. While the free replacement program doesn't currently cover these models, Google may offer solutions on a case-by-case basis.
