Google might surprise you with how long a Pixel battery’s lifespan really is

Google’s Pixel phones, like most modern smartphones, rely on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are prized for their efficiency and energy density but naturally degrade over time due to regular use and environmental factors. Over time, this degradation results in shorter runtime, reduced power efficiency in extreme temperatures, and, eventually, the need for battery replacement. Understanding how to care for a battery is key to extending its lifespan and maintaining optimal performance and that’s is why Google published a support paper on this subject recently. It also tells how long a Pixel battery will last. And that is longer than you might expect. Recently Apple came with a similar update only a few days ago.

How charge cycles affect battery health

Battery lifespan is measured in charge cycles, which refer to the number of times a battery is fully discharged and recharged. Partial discharges and charges are also included in this count. For example, using your Pixel phone from a full 100% charge down to 50%, then recharging it back to 100%, is calculated as half a charge cycle. Over time, these cycles accumulate and gradually reduce the battery’s capacity to hold a charge.

Google has designed Pixel batteries to retain at least 80% of their original capacity up to a certain number of charge cycles. For Pixel models ranging from the Pixel 3 to the Pixel 8 Pro, this threshold is approximately 800 charge cycles. With the Pixel 8a and newer models, the capacity retention improves, lasting for about 1,000 charge cycles. This advancement ensures that even with daily charging, the battery should maintain strong performance for several years before noticeable degradation.

Optimizing a battery for better performance

Caring for a battery involves understanding how external conditions and charging habits affect its longevity. Charging in a cool environment is one of the most critical factors, as high temperatures can accelerate battery degradation. An ideal charging temperature is around 25°C. Avoiding prolonged exposure to heat, such as leaving your phone in a hot car or under direct sunlight, is equally important.

Using adaptive charging is another way to protect your battery. This feature, which slows down the charging process during overnight charging, reduces unnecessary stress on the battery. Minimizing complete discharges by charging your phone before it drops to 0% can also extend the battery’s lifespan.

If you plan to store your phone for an extended period, such as 30 days or longer, Google recommends charging it to at least 50% before storage. Storing a completely discharged phone risks permanent capacity loss, while storing a fully charged battery for too long can cause swelling.

When it’s time to replace your battery

As a Pixel completes more charge cycles, an user may notice a decline in battery runtime or performance. When a battery can no longer hold a charge effectively or reaches the cycle threshold (800 or 1,000 cycles, depending on the model), it is time to consider a replacement. A new battery can restore the phone’s runtime, improve its ability to function in extreme temperatures, and extend the device’s overall lifespan.

Managing a swollen battery safely

Although rare, a lithium-ion battery may swell as it ages or due to overuse. A swollen battery typically does not present an immediate safety hazard but must be handled with caution. Avoid pressing on or puncturing the battery, as this can cause overheating or further damage. Swollen batteries are more vulnerable to dust and liquids, which can compromise the phone’s internal components.
