CCS Insight released new data on the performance of the global secondary mobile market over the last two quarters of 2024. As expected, the fourth quarter saw the highest volume, with approximately 33.5 million used and refurbished devices sold worldwide. The European market followed a similar trend, with some Western European countries experiencing slight year-over-year growth. However, overall sales in Europe remained stable, increasing by only 300,000 units compared to the previous year.
Western Europe sees modest growth
Looking closer at Western Europe, new smartphone sales grew by 2.1%, while the organized secondary market expanded by 4.7%. The average sales price of a used smartphone declined year over year by 7.2% but remained stable quarter over quarter. This suggests that while the market is growing, price pressures continue to influence consumer purchasing decisions.
Mature markets show limited expansion
Growth in more mature markets was minimal, while some emerging markets recorded double-digit increases. The disparity in growth rates highlights varying consumer adoption patterns across regions. Supply constraints remain a significant challenge, with a large volume of devices needing to be imported. European regulations, particularly CE certification and USB-C requirements, continue to make sourcing high-quality devices more difficult for businesses operating in the secondary market.
